What is the difference between RTUs and Split systems

Oct 6, 2016 | Q & A

What is the difference between an RTU and a split system?

An RTU or Roof Top Unit is a packaged system with the blower, evaporator, compressor, and condenser all in the same box on the roof. Split systems have the blower and evaporator (air handler unit or AHU) indoors, and the compressor and condenser (CU) outdoors. Split systems are common for home applications. If you are wondering what happens when that outside condenser turns on, it is releasing the hot air removed from the home. The indoor unit and condenser are connected by refrigerant tubing and control wiring.
